24th February 1999 - MP3s on the way

Since the sad demise of Replica - a cheap and cheerful studio in a superb location with the very, very nice Sean in charge (but no toilet!) - we've been using Testa-Rossa Studios in Longsight, Manchester, an altogether more upmarket gig albeit at decent rates (and a toilet!). Whilst not wishing to imply that previous efforts were...lacking...we have been impressed by the increased rigour of engineer Andy Drelincourt, to the extent that we've decided to ... re-record our twelve (or thirteen, or fourteen) favourite songs for our "Xmas album" (friends and relatives - be very afraid).

So far, we have new, much enhanced recordings of "East West" and "My Life Underground", complete with Cubase magic. "East West" in particular has some strong mellotron strings, which "...Underground" includes one of the Great Jennie Momentstm in the break. Alan has also contributed a new song fresh from his MIDI sequencer called...er..."New Song", which features a stunning vocal turn from "Cult of" Dan Smith.

Hence we have decided to upload some of the tracks to mp3.com, partly to support a non-proprietory format against the fat, capitalist pig record industry and partly to see whether anyone bothers to download them. At the moment, we're waiting for them to approve our uploads; they should appear within the next few days. <-- They're up!

Other hot rumour: this year is our tenth anniversary since the band was founded at Aber as Rat Salad. To celebrate, we're looking into playing a gig (first time since the Fountain, 16th June 1991). No details yet as we're still checking out the intended venue. All we can say is: it will be in Aber and if it happens, it will be the best night you can have prior to the millenium. And the best night we'll have since 1991.

We were rather perturbed during a recent bout of reminiscing to discover that none of us appeared to have been part of the same band during our time in Aber. Perceptions of our relative popularity appear to vary somewhat. However, there was general agreement that we were better than Catsodogmoon or Hectors House. So there. :-p
